April 2011 Klapmuts National Loft Report:

By the time this newsletter, reaches publication we would have entered into a new era in pigeon racing in South Africa, with Mr. Faunty Gilmer, being elected the new SANPO president at the recently held SANPO AGM in Worcester Western Cape. We trust that Mr. Gilmer’s term as SANPO president, will bring with it along a willingness ready to tackle all challenges head on and to engage all unions throughout South Africa, to the betterment of our Sport at all levels. The management of the Klapmuts National Loft would want to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Faunty Gilmer every success and we look forward to his on-going and positive contributions to the sport of pigeon racing in South Africa. To the outgoing president Mr. Rhyn Van Rooyen we say thank you for a term well served and know that you will continue to support the various organizations where and when needed.

Well, closer to home now and we have reached our minimum target as indicated in last month’s newsletter. The total intake of the Klapmuts loft is now just on 450 pigeons, about 50 pigeons short of what we’d hoped for. To have reached this total would not be possible without YOU, the pigeon fanciers, of South Africa and specifically the Western Cape. We MUST say a HUGE thank you for your loyal support, the intake of the number of birds at the Klapmuts Loft shows that we can overcome most challenges if we are prepared to “get our hands dirty”. We know that pigeon fanciers have more options these days for one loft races and competitions but to still have reached our minimum projected totals we again say thank you to all fanciers, administrators, unions and various clubs who helped us reach this first milestone.

The pigeons have received their booster parymixo vaccine, with Avi Vacc. Being used. This vaccine was donated to the loft by Dr. Botha (Aviomed). The birds have responded well to the Avi Vaccine and the general health of the birds continues to be good. We have had a few isolated cases of ornithosis at the loft, but with a prescribed treatment of doxybiotic all infected birds have now recovered completely and no more “wet noses” are evident at the loft. Soon after the final intake of replacement and late birds, we will administer the medi pox vaccine which by all accounts this year has worked much more effectively and we must acknowledge and give credit to Medpet for taking into account the complaints and enquiries received from various fanciers last year, to have made the improved product available in such a short turn around time.

All fanciers who have lost birds at the loft have been notified via SMS notification and have subsequently replaced birds as such. We at this stage would like to ask all fanciers to pay their preference birds and perch fee for reserve birds. We are hoping to have our first official loft listing up by end of April, by which time the new e-clocking system should have already been installed and commissioned.

Once all the pigeons have been properly homed and orientated we will start with scheduled loft flying twice per day, this scheduled exercise should commence around the first week of May if all goes well.

To our two MAIN sponsors, Agricol and Medpet, a heartfelt thanks for your continued support and promotion of the Klapmuts National Loft. It is good to know that the Klapmuts Loft can be associated with two market leaders as yourselves in your respective industries. This past week i went for a casual visit to Dr De Beer, again i must mention the friendliness and politeness his staff radiates and the professionalism he displays to all visitors. It really makes every visit to him enjoyable and again the Klapmuts National Loft’s close proximity to Dr. De Beers facilities, adds tremendous value in assisting the loft management team keeping the pigeons general health in check and ensuring optimum response to any prescribed treatments.

To all our other loyal supporters, sponsors and partners THANK YOU, for entrusting us with your birds once more for the 2011 season. With the start of the Cape winter fast approaching feel free to come and pop in for a Chat with Yazeed and O.B. and enjoy a special cup of O.B. ‘s “java”.
