IF ONLY

Pontool
If only. If only Vryheid Resiesduif Klub, Koos and Formyn de Kok and Pat Wright had nominated their champion birds Koos, Rossi and Lilly for the Allflight pontool, they would each have won an additional R3 000+ on top of the R1 500 first prize for Hot Spots 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

They did not, and the pontool now stands at R9 760 plus whatever is nominated on the final Hot Spot 5. Add the expected R3 000+ nominations for HS5, and the winner of that race will collect R1 500 for winning the Hot Spot plus an estimated further amount of R13 000 for winning the pontool. Provided of course the first pigeon over the trap is activated for the race (yes, there are still some fanciers who have not activated their entry or reserves, ask Ockie & Erik van Wyk, AJ Nel and the Wilkens about the money they lost for neglecting to pay the activation fee when it was due) and provided the same bird is nominated for the pontool, and over half the birds in the loft are not.

You may still join in even if you do not know the meaning of the word pontool (it is a combination of pools and pontoon that most fanciers play in their clubs and organizations some time or other, and it cannot be too much of a sin as all the dominees regularly take part in ours.) The only proviso for late joiners is that they have to ‘buy in’ to share in the carry-over amount. If you did not take part in the pontools for HS2, HS3 and HS4, it would cost you an additional R60 over and above the entry fee of R20 for HS5. You may nominate as many of your own birds as you wish, but remember that the bird has to win the race in order to win the pontool.

If the pontool is not won on HS5, the carry-over amount plus pontool amounts entered for the final race will be won by the first pontool pigeon clocked in the final race from Colesberg on 10 August 2009. Theoretically the pontoon on the final race could be won by the pigeon finishing in position 423, as there are still many un-pontooled birds in the running. Surely you can do better than that! If not you need to attend our end-of-season auctions to get your hands on better stock birds.

In summary:
Pontool prize money in the final HS5 will be ca R13 000
Regular participants pay R20/bird to take part in pontool and if you want to ‘buy in’ you pay an extra R60/pigeon
If the pontool is not won on HS5, carry-over plus final race nominations should result in pontool prize money of over R16 000 in the final.
If the pontool is won in HS5, we start afresh for the final race. There is already a handsome kitty for that one as a number of fanciers paid in advance.

Car race
If only your pigeon has two wings (which it has) and if only its owner enters it for the car race (which you should), you could be the winner of a brand new car.
The car race will take place over two legs, HS5 and the final race.
R400 entry fee per pigeon has to be paid by 22 July 2009 latest
No late entries or ‘buy ins’ will be accepted
In the event of insufficient entries received to pay for a new car and meaningful other prizes, money prizes will be paid out
The pigeon that covers the total distance from the two liberation points in the shortest time wins the race. All other prizes are similarly calculated on total time taken to finish both races

The results for the 4th Hot Spot are as follows:
