The future existence of the young pigeon fancier!

There have been articles in the SA Pigeon News highlighting the fact that our sport is dwindling in numbers because of costs, and the fact that pigeon fanciers are caught up in their own world causing them to have no vision when it comes to what is needed to grow our sport amongst youngsters both girls and boys. My son Judd aged 6yrs is very involved. I as a pigeon fancier and parent have taken a proactive approach in sports development; at this young age Judd is able to handle pigeons, he loves helping with loft chores, especially scraping of perches; he enjoys accompanying me on training tosses; his responsibility is the liberation of the pigeons which he executes with great eagerness. He has accompanied me to the Durbanville District Club which is affiliated to the Boland Homing Union which is steadily growing in numbers. Fanciers like Bobby Wadley; Johan Havenga and the President of our Club, Uncle Georgie Todd have allowed Judd to work the ring stretcher, flaps of baskets and handling of our pigeons under supervision. Judd’s highlight for the evening is receiving a sweet from Uncle Georgie for his club participation.

Judd has since received a small 1.8m x 1.8m pitched roof log-lap loft given to him by fellow fancier, Theo Boock. He has also been fortunate in receiving pigeons from Faunty Gillmer, Tersius Steyl, and Charlie Benn.

In 2010, he will field a team of 25 pigeons from his own little loft. I wish to thank these fanciers for their contribution to his future in pigeon racing; as far as the SANPO initiative is concerned, they have donated a junior hand clock for him to use. If we as fanciers don’t get proactive in our approach and change our mindset towards young fanciers and keep up with social changes in society, our sport will disappear in time to come. Let’s continue to support and encourage young fanciers and share our knowledge for generations to come.

Yours in Sport
