Introduction to the National Federation of Pigeon Racing Norway

Norway is a large northern european country where 4.5 million people live.
It is part of what people call Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Danmark)

The National Federation of Pigeon Racing Norway was founded in 1912 (nearly 100 years), and counted until mai 2008 around 800 registered pigeon fanciers divided in 16 regional groups.

The racing season is taking place each year between Mai and August each year, with young bird season in september until mid october.
Norway has a low amount of pigeon fanciers compared to someof the biggest countries in Europe but every year, fanciers from Norway are always amoung the best in international competions (One loft races, World championship, etc).

For example last year Steinar Thowsein from Tønsberg member of Team Pigeon Vitality (60 miles south-west Oslo) finished 5th in the World Championship organised in Belgium where 45543 birds competed from 61 countries.

This success is not the only one, we have registered many podium in the last years in many well known competition (Million Dollar race and more).
It is particularly due to the fact that some regional groups are flying birds from Germany back to Norway and from Danmark to Norway as well.
These groups are flying there pigeons in about 200 miles of open sea between these places and Norway, the wind is very strong and blow from 2 different places, north to south in Germany, and south to north in Danmark.
This change of wind condition in addition to low temperature makes it extremelly tought for the pigeons.





In addition Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Danmark) has about 10 natural reserves of Hawks and Falcons, so once the strongest birds have past the hard weather conditions, it is time to resist to the attacks from predators near or over the forest and mountains. Only the best can make it.




The National Federation of Pigeon Racing has equiped his website with technological help that provides for his members a better support.
A forum for the members to share informations and datas, an online web-weather forecasting 5 days in advance the coming situation.
In 2008 Pigeon Vitality and the The National Federation of Pigeon Racing have been doing a project of getting more members.
For that Pigeon Vitality and the The National Federation of Pigeon Racing have been visiting 55 schools in 16 district and presented the history of the noble sports to more than 745 kids.
As a result, 284 out of 745 kids signed up and got their first couple by the local district office thru the existing members excited to share and guide these new fanciers thru this extrodinary and disciplined sport.

Today the federation counts nearly a thousand members.

Introduction to the History of the Pigeon in Scandinavia

The history of the pigeon in Scandinavia started in 800AC when the Viking used to rule a part of europe.
To communicate with their friendly viking tribes for information or more support while invading other parts of europe, the viking has developped a very distinctive network of pigeons.
Each ship had 6 pigeons, these war ships had to send each a bird back to base with the same message.
This technic was efficient against enemies that where sending their hawks and falcons to cut the communication between the vikings.

But non one like the Vikings mastered the control of the falcons and Hawks, so when the enemies tried to use as well pigeons for communication, it very often failed as the viking where not only killing their pigeons with their wild birds, but they were retreaving the message that was sent by the enemies.
